Downsize Your Possessions to Travel RTW

By Shannon ODonnell

One of the biggest secrets in the traveling industry is the fact that long-term travel is actually incredibly affordable. Round the world travelers are able to save up the funds they need to travel without a job for a year or more, which means that it's doable on nearly any income level.

A lot of Westerners have a huge preoccupation with stuff - materialism is a huge issue in the Western world and RTW travelers are not to be left out from this list! Many dreamers out there, travel addicts who consume destination stories and plot out their dream travel locations feel that it's out of their reach because they don't make enough money - but that's largely because we're spending out cash on materialistic goods instead of experiences.

It really comes down to the savings aspect; rather than funnel money into cool products and rather than "keeping up with the Jones,'" travelers who truly want to realize their dream of traveling around the world just need to focus on the concept of savings. And not just any savings, but the creation of a travel fund that is created from the money that you have left over each month when you stop buying unneeded products. This is a key initial step to planning RTW travel.

Beyond stopping the acquisition of new material goods though, RTW travelers are really good at accurately taking stock of what they already own and assessing what they need. Purging is an important skill and doubly important for long-term and around the world travelers - otherwise you have to store all of those possessions, and that's an unneeded expense over time. Beyond the lightening feeling of purging, if you sell a lot of these possessions it's another way to quickly boost your travel fund.

Saving up for a round the world trip - or even just long-term travel is going to take time. Although travel is incredibly affordable in developing countries, remember that most RTW tippers spend two and sometimes even three years plotting out their trip, downsizing their possessions, and funneling savings into a travel-specific fund - it's affordable but takes time! - 31517
